BREAKING: Tinubu to consult further on appropriate national minimum wage

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has announced that he needs additional time to thoroughly consult on the new minimum wage for public sector workers. This statement was made during the Federal Executive Council (FEC) meeting on Tuesday, when the topic was brought up for discussion.

The Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, shared this update while briefing State House Correspondents. He explained that the proposal was put on hold to allow for extensive consultations with various stakeholders, including representatives from local government areas, states, and the Federal Government.

Idris said, “Many have been asking if the New Minimum Wage would be deliberated today at the FEC meeting, and whether the government had decided on the new wage. The tripartite committee, consisting of the Nigeria Labour Congress, the Trade Union Congress, the Organized Private Sector, and government representatives, had already submitted a report to the President. He has reviewed this report.

“However, as is standard procedure, the FEC discussed the matter because the new national minimum wage decision is not solely up to the Federal Government. The memo was stepped down to allow the President to conduct further consultations, ensuring an informed decision that considers the implications for states, local governments, and the Federal Government.”
