Dr. Ademola Ayodele, a renowned gynecologist and Medical Director of a fertility center in Lagos, has made a passionate plea for increased education and awareness on menstrual pain management. In an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria, he emphasized the need to educate women and girls on the importance of seeking medical attention for menstrual pain that goes beyond the normal discomfort associated with menstruation.
According to Dr. Ayodele, many women and girls suffer in silence, assuming that painful menstruation is a normal part of life. However, he stressed that not all menstrual pains are normal and that some may be indicative of underlying conditions such as endometriosis, infection, or fibroid. These conditions can have serious consequences if left untreated, including depression, infertility, and even death.
Dr. Ayodele urged young girls and women to seek medical attention if their menstrual pain persists or is severe. He also advised parents, caregivers, and teachers to encourage their wards to seek medical help instead of dismissing menstrual pain as normal. By doing so, we can break the silence on menstrual pain and ensure that women and girls receive the care they need to lead healthy and fulfilling lives.
The gynecologist explained that while some menstrual pain may be alleviated with anti-inflammatory drugs, pain caused by endometriosis or other conditions may persist throughout menstruation and require medical attention. He highlighted the importance of awareness and education, noting that endometriosis is a leading cause of depression among women due to ignorance and lack of information. By educating ourselves and others, we can make a difference and improve the lives of women and girls everywhere.
