The Nigerian government is facing pressure to intervene in the maltreatment of its citizens abroad. An advocacy group, Dynamic Ambassadors for Social Transformation and Orientation Initiative, has condemned the ill-treatment of Nigerians in diaspora, describing the situation as alarming.
The group's concerns are centered on the detention of Pastor Benjamin Egbaji in Benin Republic, where he has been held without substantiated charges. They claim that over 5,000 other Nigerians are facing similar plight in Benin Republic, with many languishing in detention.
The group is urging the government to take decisive action, applying the principle of reciprocity and demonstrating its power in response to the unacceptable behavior from the authorities in Benin Republic. They suggest that Pastor Egbaji's popularity in the country may have led to his detention.
In response, the Nigerians in the Diaspora Commission (NiDCOM) has assured the group that the government has intervened in Pastor Egbaji's case, providing additional legal representation. NiDCOM spokesman Abdur-Rahman Balogun has stated that the government will apply diplomatic efforts to ensure justice for the Nigerian detainee, but has also advised Nigerians to be law-abiding in their host countries.
