A historic reunion took place in Abidjan on Thursday as three former and current Super Eagles coaches came together at the African Coaches Symposium. Augustine Eguavoen, the current caretaker coach, was joined by former handlers Gernot Rohr and Jose Peseiro, rekindling memories of their time in charge of the Nigerian national team.
Jose Peseiro's Contribution
Peseiro, who led the Super Eagles to the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations in Cote d'Ivoire, was a panelist at the two-day event. Although he left his post in February after his contract expired, his contributions to Nigerian football were acknowledged and respected by his peers.
Gernot Rohr's New Venture
Gernot Rohr, who holds the record for the longest tenure as Super Eagles coach (five years and 55 matches), is now in charge of the Benin Republic national team. His new team, the Cheetahs, recently suffered a 3-0 loss to the Super Eagles in a 2025 AFCON qualifier.
Augustine Eguavoen's Interim Stint
Meanwhile, Augustine Eguavoen is currently serving his second interim stint as Super Eagles coach. The reunion of these three coaches at the symposium provided a unique opportunity for them to share experiences and insights, promoting growth and development in African football.
